PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY WITH STEEL

Whether you need covered parking for vehicles, RVs, and boats, or a secure enclosed building to protect equipment, tools, and valuables — a metal storage building or carport is the most affordable and durable solution in North Carolina. Steel doesn't rot, warp, or attract termites like wood, and it stands up to NC's storms, humidity, and coastal winds year after year.

At Carolina Metal Structures, we're a licensed NC General Contractor (#108035). We don't just drop off a kit and leave. We provide complete turnkey installation — from permits to the final bolt.

Our storage buildings and carports are ideal for vehicle protection (cars, trucks, motorcycles), RV and boat storage, lawn equipment and trailer storage, business inventory and supply storage, tool and equipment security, and covered outdoor workspace.

CUSTOMIZATION OPTIONS

Side & End Panels

Choose from fully open, half-panels (covers the bottom half for wind protection while keeping airflow), three-quarter panels, or fully enclosed walls. Mix and match on different sides to get exactly the coverage you need.

Height Options

Standard carports start at 6-foot leg height, but we offer extended heights for RVs, fifth wheels, boats on trailers, and commercial vehicles. Storage buildings start at 8-foot walls and can go up to 16 feet or more for stacking and overhead clearance.

Color Options

Choose from a full manufacturer color chart for roof, walls, and trim. Popular NC choices include white, gray, red, green, tan, and brown. Two-tone combinations with wainscoting are available for a premium look that adds curb appeal to your property.

Anchoring Systems

Concrete slab anchoring is recommended for storage buildings and permanent carports — provides the most secure hold and cleanest finish. Ground-mount anchoring uses rebar augers driven into the ground and works well for carports on grass, gravel, or dirt. Both methods are engineered for NC wind loads.

Lean-To Additions

Add extra covered space on one or both sides of your structure. A lean-to on a carport gives you additional vehicle coverage. A lean-to on a storage building creates a covered work area or equipment staging zone. It's the most cost-effective way to add square footage.

Door Configurations

Roll-up garage doors from 6x6 up to 12x12 for storage buildings. Walk-in doors with commercial hardware and deadbolts. End-wall and side-wall door placements to match your property layout. Drive-through configurations available.

NC BUILDING PERMITS FOR CARPORTS & STORAGE BUILDINGS

In most North Carolina counties, carports and storage buildings over 120–144 square feet require a building permit. Some counties have different requirements for open structures (carports) vs. fully enclosed buildings, and the rules can vary significantly from one jurisdiction to another.

As a licensed NC General Contractor (#108035), we know the permitting requirements across NC counties and handle the entire process for you:

Don't risk fines or forced removal with an unpermitted structure. With Carolina Metal Structures, everything is done right, done legal, and done to code.

STORAGE BUILDING & CARPORT FAQ

How much does a carport cost in North Carolina?
Carport prices start at $3,500 for a basic 12x20 single-car cover and range up to $13,000+ for a 30x40 oversized structure. Pricing depends on size, height, roof style, side panel configuration, anchoring method, and wind load engineering for your county.
How much does a metal storage building cost in NC?
Storage building prices range from $5,500 for a 12x20 small unit to $32,000+ for a 40x60 commercial building. Final pricing depends on size, roof style, steel gauge, wind load engineering, number of doors, insulation, foundation type, and site conditions.
Do I need a permit for a carport in North Carolina?
In most NC counties, yes. Carports over 120–144 square feet typically require a permit. Some jurisdictions treat open structures differently than enclosed buildings. As a licensed contractor (#108035), we determine what your county requires and handle all permitting.
Can I enclose my carport later?
Yes. Many customers start with an open carport and add side panels, end walls, and doors later. We can build your carport with enclosure-ready framing so future upgrades are straightforward and cost-effective. We also retrofit existing carports.
What's the difference between a carport and a storage building?
A carport is typically open or partially enclosed — it provides weather protection but not full security. A storage building is fully enclosed with steel walls, lockable doors, and weatherproof construction. Many customers get both, or we build hybrid structures with open bays and enclosed storage under one roof.
Are your structures engineered for NC weather?
Yes. Every carport and storage building is fully engineered and stamped for your county's wind and snow load requirements. Structures are certified for up to 150 MPH wind ratings depending on configuration — critical for North Carolina's storm season.
